How to Avoid Online Purchase Scams in Pakistan: A Buyer’s Guide
You find a bike, a laptop or a phone at a good price on a classified website, a social media group or a page. The photos look fine and the seller is friendly. They ask for an advance to “hold” it, or for the full amount before delivery. A few hours later the phone is switched off, or the item that arrives is nothing like the pictures.
This happens to careful people too. Most online buying scams do not rely on clever technology. They rely on one simple gap: the buyer pays before anyone has checked the seller or the product. This guide explains how those scams work, the warning signs to watch for, and how to close that gap before your money leaves your account.
Why people get scammed when buying from third parties
When you buy from an individual instead of an established shop, you are trusting a stranger. These are the situations in which that trust is most often misused:
- You pay the seller directly, and early. Once the money is sent by bank transfer or mobile wallet, it is very hard to recover.
- You cannot verify the product’s condition. Photos can be copied from other listings, edited, or show a different item altogether.
- You cannot verify the seller. A name, a phone number and a profile picture prove nothing. Accounts are easy to create and easy to abandon.
- You are in a different city or country. The further away you are, the less you can inspect, and the more you depend on what you are told.
- Urgency is used against you. “Another buyer is on the way” is designed to stop you from asking questions.
Red flags of an online buying scam
Any one of these should make you stop and slow down:
- The price is far below the normal market price for the same item.
- The seller insists on an advance or full payment before you can see the item.
- They refuse a live video call or a fresh photo with today’s date or your name written on paper.
- They will not meet in person, or they keep changing the meeting place.
- The name on the payment account does not match the name they gave you.
- They cannot show an invoice, registration papers or any proof of ownership.
- The story keeps changing: they are “abroad”, “in the army” or “sending through a courier” so you must pay first.
- The listing is new, has no history, or the same photos appear under different names.
A safe-buying checklist
These habits remove most of the risk, whatever you are buying:
- Compare prices. Check several listings. A price that looks too good usually is.
- Ask for a live video. Ask the seller to show the item, its serial number or chassis number, and to say your name on camera.
- Check ownership. For vehicles, ask for the registration book and check the details match. For phones, ask for the IMEI and the box and receipt. For electronics, ask for the invoice.
- Match the identity. The name on the ID should match the name on the payment account.
- Meet in a safe public place and bring someone with you.
- Inspect before you pay. Look at the item with your own eyes. Never send an advance to someone you have not met.
- Keep a record. Save chats, screenshots, receipts and the seller’s number.
- Pay in a way that leaves a trail, and only after you are satisfied.
What if you cannot go yourself?
Often you cannot follow that checklist. You may live in another city, or abroad, and the item is far from you. Or you may simply not have the time. This is where most expensive mistakes happen, because the only way to check the item is to rely on the seller’s word.
The safest answer is to have someone you can trust look at the item and the seller for you, before you pay.
How TaskBridge helps you verify before you pay
TaskBridge connects you with verified local agents who can do that checking in person. The service is run by TaskBridge Digital Services (SMC-Private) Limited, a company registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), Corporate Unique Identification No. 0360229.
Every agent's mobile number, CNIC and live selfie are checked before they can accept a task. See exactly what we check. When you need a purchase checked, an agent can:
- Meet the seller and confirm they are a real person at the place they claim.
- Confirm the product exists and matches the listing.
- Inspect its visible, external condition and send you clear photos and video through the app’s chat.
- Report back honestly, so you can decide to buy, negotiate or walk away, before any money moves.
Two ways to get your agent
Choose your own agent
Open Agents near you or Search Agents, filter by the kind of task, and sort by nearest, top rated, most experienced or least busy. Open a profile to see ratings and completed tasks, then message the agent directly.
Post a task and let one accept
Describe the job, the place and the time. Verified agents near that place can see your task and accept it, and you can chat with the agent before anything starts.
How it works
- Open TaskBridge and post a verification task: what the item is, the seller’s location and what you want checked.
- A verified agent near the seller accepts the task, or you choose one yourself from the nearby list.
- The agent visits the seller and sends you photos, video and notes in the app.
- You decide whether to go ahead with the purchase, with real information in hand.
Check first, pay second

Frequently asked questions
How can I check a seller before paying online?
Ask for a live video of the item, make sure the seller’s name and number match their ID, check ownership documents or invoices, and do not pay in advance to someone you have not met. If you cannot go yourself, a verified TaskBridge agent can meet the seller and inspect the item in person for you.
Is it safe to pay an advance to an online seller?
It is the most common way buyers lose money. Avoid paying in advance until you, or someone you trust, has seen the item and met the seller.
What does a TaskBridge agent check?
The agent checks that the seller is who they say they are, that the item exists, and what condition it is visibly in, and reports back to you with photos or video. See the disclaimer below for what is not included.
Is TaskBridge a registered company?
Yes. TaskBridge is operated by TaskBridge Digital Services (SMC-Private) Limited, registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).
The bottom line
Online scams work because buyers pay first and verify later, if at all. Reverse the order. Check the seller, check the product, and only then pay. When you cannot do that yourself, ask a verified person to do it for you.
Disclaimer
TaskBridge agents verify the product physically, meaning its visible and external condition, and the seller. Inner details of a product are not included in this service. For example, an agent will not test or assess the engine of a bike, or confirm that a laptop works properly inside. For a technical inspection, please hire a qualified mechanic or technician. Verification confirms who an agent is; it does not guarantee the outcome of a task. Agents are independent individuals, and the decision to buy and pay remains yours.
